The One by John Marrs (416 pages)

1984. The Handmaid’s Tale. Fahrenheit 411. I don’t know about you, but my love of dystopian fiction started back in high school. I dove into the classics head first, amazed by the imagination, yet somewhat horrified at the possibility of such societies ever being realized.

So when I saw The One by John Marrs taking over my Instagram feed, I was intrigued. Compared to the dark TV show Black Mirror, the premise is simple: How far would you go to find The One?

According to the book’s summary, through a simple DNA test, you can be 100% “matched” with the one and only person you’re destined to fall in love with. But the discovery has its downsides: test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance, and love.

A word-of-mouth hit in the United Kingdom, The One is a quickly-paced page tuner that focuses on five very different people’s quest to find their Match – and the dire consequences that follow.

Here are the Top Three Reasons to Love This Book:

  1. It’s a fast, engaging read. Each chapter is no longer than 2 ½ – 3 pages.
  2. There are five different characters to follow, (ranging from a student, a CEO, a couple, a divorcee, and a sociopath). It’s like five short stories rolled into one book.
  3. You know there are going to be twists, but you never quite know which way they’re going to go. So instead of just promising to be a page-turning thriller, it actually is!

The Bottom Line: 4/5 Brookie Stars
If you’re looking for a quick, yet engrossing, thriller, The One is… well, the one!. After reading this book in just two sittings, I googled the author and am happy to share his next installment entitled The Passengers (about a self-driving car that takes its victims on a harrowing “ride”), will hit bookstores in late August. If it’s anything like his freshman offering, it’s going to be quite the ride.
